Thanks to inter-agency collaboration prompted by Councilmember Michael A. Iasilli and Superintendent Charlie McArdle, the Yellow Light program will return to the traffic light located on Hill Street and St. Andrew’s Road next week, Monday June 10, 2024, and will be operational during the afternoon rush hour timeframe, from 3 PM – 6 PM, Monday to Friday.
Councilmember Iasilli worked to coordinate with Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Southampton Town Police Chief James Kiernan, Mayor William Manger, Southampton Village Police Chief Suzanne Hurteau, and Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle, to help restore the blinking yellow light program on Hill Street, which is a high-traffic road in the summer season, leading to significant congestion. As the local workforce continues to bear the brunt of increasing traffic issues in Southampton, this effort will help provide some relief to commuters traveling from Southampton Village to Hampton Bays, and other hamlets further west.
Mayor Manger mentioned, “The Village is glad to be part of the solution to help alleviate afternoon congestion by keeping the traffic moving.”
Superintendent Charlie McArdle also stated, “There are several PM traffic programs that need to be enacted to move westbound traffic and this is an important one to start.”
Additionally, Shinnecock Nation Chairwoman Lisa Goree noted, “Shinnecock Nation applauds the Yellow Light Program. It will allow our tribal members the ability to access our territory in a safe and timely manner.”
“This is all thanks to the amazing coordination between our local Village and Town Police Departments, and our Highway Department. We will now be able to once again help many residents who work in or around Southampton Village and live in hamlets like Hampton Bays, and the Shinnecock Nation. A special thanks to Assemblyman Thiele, who has been a committed partner at the State level to help protect our quality of life. I also commend our Town and Village Police Chiefs for setting a stellar example of interdepartmental collaboration for the benefit of the public,” commented Councilmember Iasilli.
