Town of Southampton, NY January 17, 2025 — With single digit temperatures expected for our area next week, as well as some possible snow, the Town of Southampton would like to take a moment to remind people of some winter weather preparedness information and safety tips.
“As winter storms approach, we encourage all of our residents to closely monitor weather forecasts and take necessary precautions” said Town Supervisor Maria Moore. “Freezing temperatures can be especially dangerous for outdoor workers, infants, the elderly, and those with certain chronic health conditions. Your safety is our top priority—plan ahead, limit outdoor exposure and avoid unnecessary travel. Together, we can navigate winter weather safely and responsibly," Moore said.
Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy indicated that some steps that people can take to be safe are to, “avoid travel during hazardous winter weather conditions if possible, make sure your heating equipment is serviced and in good working order, dress appropriately for the weather, and have necessary household supplies on hand before any weather emergency happens.” People should also recognize warning signs of hypothermia like confusion, sleepiness, shivering and stiff muscles. Sharing Murphy’s sentiments about avoiding travel, Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle asked residents and visitors to, “please give our dedicated crews a chance to clear the roads and stay off of them if possible during snow events this winter.” McArdle also stressed the value of taking parked vehicles off the roads when snow is expected so that crews can more safely, easily, and effectively navigate and clear roadways.
The Town of Southampton encourages residents to be cautious when going outside or traversing the roadways during and after winter weather events. Additional information about ways to prepare for severe weather events can be found on the Emergency Management page of the Town’s website (www.southamptontownny.gov) and on the Safety page at the National Weather Service’s website (www.weather.gov). The Town is always monitoring possible weather events so that it can prepare and try to minimize negative impacts to our area. The Town encourages all residents to do the same and to stay informed before, during and after severe weather events.
