In an effort to meet the requirements of a New York State law that came into effect in February 2024, Councilmembers Michael Iasilli and Cyndi McNamara are working to enhance consumer protection by raising awareness on credit card surcharges for residents.
Business transactions that impose a credit card surcharge must operate with more transparency during the cost of sale. There are a number of ways to do this that satisfies the new state regulation. 1) Retailers can advertise both the non-credit card price and added surcharge price on items; or 2) they can simply advertise the price with the 4% surcharge on all items. A 4% discount can be advertised at the front counter for all cash or non-credit card purchases in addition to one of the aforementioned options.
The state has provided a helpful Guide and Video to help businesses comply with the new law.
“As we look to protect working families from unnecessary added costs and promote transparent business practices, our efforts to inform and encourage compliance helps keep the Town of Southampton in line with the new requirements,” commented Councilmember Iasilli.
