Alkaline and carbon zinc batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, can be disposed of safely with your regular household garbage.
Batteries containing hazardous components such as mercury, cadmium, lead, or lithium (including batteries for motor vehicles, hearing aids, watches, computers, etc.) should not be placed in the garbage.
Batteries will no longer be accepted by the Town of Southampton’s Waste Management facilities. Batteries should be returned to retailers who sell batteries and electronics such as: Best Buy, Wal-Mart, K-mart, Target, Radio Shack, and Home Depot. Refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for the new battery regulations.
Note: Many retailers also have recycling programs for the electronics they sell; you may wish to call retailers such as those listed above to recycle your outdated electronics products. You may dispose of electronics for no cost at the Town of Southampton’s Hampton Bays and Southampton Recycling Centers.
